Memoir of Life
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
For every raindrop, there is a rainbow, for every sunrise there is a sunset.
Our heavenly Father blessed us with Mr. Watson Higgins, Jr. on September 4, 1945. The Lord called him to eternal rest for a better life of peace and happiness on June 15, 2012.
Watson was born to Mrs. Beatrice Beck Higgins and the late Watson Higgins, Sr. in Leflore County, Mississippi.
His father. Watson Higgins, Sr. and his son, Dexter Garrard Higgins, preceded him in death.
Watson accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a faithful member of Jennings Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
As a teenager, Watson joined the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America, with Saint Francis Catholic School. Watson quickly exhibited leadership skills and mastered all requirements for Eagle Scouts in record time. He often shared his knowledge with family and friends, and later iterated that his experience with the Boy Scouts was life altering.
God blessed Watson with numerous talents. As a high school student he impressed his teachers with his skills and artistic acumen. During annual homecoming events, Watson was often sought by teachers and administrators for his innate, tasteful, and aesthetic abilities in designing and building floats for Homecoming parades and other festivities. He was the consummate "Mr. Fix It". There were very few problems in the industrial arts field that he could not solve.
He was a skilled mechanic and enjoyed the field of auto body repair technology. Watson was a patron of the arts. He was truly gifted in creating and designing oil paintings, graphics, sketches, photography, and printmaking. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends and was an avid gardener and could always be counted on for a good laugh.
Watson taught his children to love God, love Church, work hard, and use good judgment in everyday life. "In all thy ways, acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path" (Proverbs 3:6), was his favorite scripture.
Watson was joined in holy matrimony on December 27, 1980, to Myrtis Jean Fluker. Unto this union, one daughter, Chanda Higgins Ratliff and one son, the late Dexter Garrard Higgins, was born. Watson also had another daughter and son, Mrs. Denetra Butler Ware Sanders and Mr. Rodney Brown.
He is survived by: his wife of thirty-two years, Myrtis Fluker Higgins of Greenwood, MS; his mother, Beatrice Higgins of Greenwood, MS; two daughters, Chanda Higgins Ratliff and Denetra Butler Ware Sanders, both of Greenwood, MS; one son, Rodney Brown of Atlanta, GA; four sisters, Dorothy H. Nash of Pomona, CA; Hattie Higgins-Greene of Alexandria, VA; Ernestyne Matthews of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Sallye Higgins of Fairfax, VA; two brothers, Daniel Higgins of Greenwood, MS, and Samuel Higgins of Alcorn State, MS; one grandson. I Am tired of the pleasures this old world can afford. How I thirst for the fountain, that springs forth from the Lord. I have gone to the Savior. All to Jesus I owe. In the light of presence, I’ll find peace evermore.
